Why Jenna Ortega Quit Twitter: The Disturbing AI Abuse That Drove Her Off X

Jenna Ortega quit Twitter long before most fans realized she was gone. The Wednesday star revealed in August 2024 that she had deleted her X account about two or three years earlier. The reason was as disturbing as it was simple: a flood of AI-generated explicit images of herself, some depicting her as a child, had made the platform unbearable. She could not post a single thing without facing the abuse, so one day she just walked away.

Fans searching for her old handle today find nothing, and that empty space has fueled years of speculation. But there was never a mystery — only an actress who decided the cost of staying was too high.

Why Jenna Ortega Quit Twitter: What She Told the New York Times

Ortega opened up on The New York Times’ The Interview podcast in August 2024. She did not soften what pushed her out.

“I hate AI,” she said. Then she drew a careful line: the technology can do remarkable things, such as detecting breast cancer years before it progresses. “That’s beautiful,” she said. “Let’s keep it to that.”

Her own experience, however, was the opposite of beautiful. “Did I like being 14 and making a Twitter account because I was supposed to and seeing dirty edited content of me as a child? No. It’s terrifying. It’s corrupt. It’s wrong.”

The trouble started even earlier. At 12, her team told her to join Twitter to “build her image” as a child actor. The first direct message she ever opened was an unsolicited explicit photo from a stranger. “And that was just the beginning of what was to come,” she said.

Then Wednesday turned her into a global star in late 2022, and the volume exploded. “I ended up deleting it about two, three years ago because the influx after the show had come out — these absurd images and photos,” she said. “It was disgusting, and it made me feel bad. It made me feel uncomfortable. Anyway, that’s why I deleted it, because I couldn’t say anything without seeing something like that. So one day I just woke up, and I thought, ‘Oh, I don’t need this anymore.’ So I dropped it.”

Jenna Ortega’s Social Media Timeline: From Child Star to X Exit

Her exit did not happen overnight. Instead, it was the end of a decade-long souring on the platform. Here is how it unfolded:

Around 2014 — Joins Twitter at 12. Encouraged by her team to build her public image, Ortega creates an account. Her first DM is an unsolicited explicit photo.

2016 — Sees edited images of herself at 14. She later describes encountering “dirty edited content” of herself as a child. In her words, the experience was “terrifying.”

November 2022 — Wednesday premieres. The Netflix series becomes a global phenomenon. As a result, Ortega’s fame multiplies overnight — and the influx of AI-generated explicit images surges with it.

2022–2023 — Deletes her account. Ortega says she deleted Twitter “about two, three years ago” relative to August 2024, which puts the exit in this window. She kept her Instagram.

August 2024 — Goes public with the reason. On The Interview, she finally explains why she vanished from X. As a result, the story makes headlines around the world.

Today — Instagram only. Ortega still posts on Instagram but has never returned to X. She has separately said she may step back from TV once Wednesday ends — a career choice, not a disappearance.

When Did Jenna Ortega Delete Twitter?

She has never given an exact date. Based on her August 2024 interview, the deletion happened “about two, three years” earlier. That points to 2022 or 2023, right as Wednesday mania peaked.

She Has Not Vanished From Hollywood

Quitting X did not mean quitting acting. Since leaving the platform, Ortega has headlined Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, led Wednesday through additional seasons, and lined up Klara and the Sun alongside Amy Adams. For more on her career so far, see her full filmography.

Her Scream VII absence was also unrelated to social media drama. Although it followed co-star Melissa Barrera’s firing, Deadline and Variety reported that Ortega’s departure came down to scheduling conflicts with Wednesday — not the controversy.

Ortega’s name also went viral in 2025 when a YouTuber’s resemblance to her sparked cousin rumors. We covered that story here — and no, they are not related.

The Bigger Fight: AI Deepfakes and Platform Safety

Ortega’s story is part of a wider crisis. Earlier in 2024, AI-generated explicit images of Taylor Swift went viral on X, forcing the platform to temporarily block searches for her name. Lawmakers in several countries have since pushed for stronger rules against non-consensual deepfakes.

For Ortega, though, the issue was never abstract. She was a child when the images started. She was told social media was a career requirement. And when the abuse outweighed any benefit, she made the simplest choice available: she left.

Her “vanishing” was never a mystery. It was, however, a rational response to an irrational situation: she did not disappear — she just decided she did not need it anymore.
