A source told the paper the game is “incredibly intense” and everyone on set looks out for each other. “It was good for James to have a breather, as everyone felt it was for the best,” the source added. The cast rallied around him — and the show put welfare first
The BBC and the show’s producers take contestant welfare seriously. A spokesperson for the show said the safety and welfare of everyone taking part is always the highest priority. Production closely monitors and supports players throughout filming, the representative explained. That support includes a dedicated and experienced welfare team.
In other words, the system worked as it should. When a player hit a rough patch, the people around him stepped in. Because reality TV can be gruelling, that safety net matters.
Why Acaster already feared the comedians were targets
Interestingly, Acaster had flagged the pressure before filming even began. In a pre-series BBC interview, he joked that the comedians might be in trouble. Joe Lycett, Miranda Hart, Romesh Ranganathan, Joanne McNally and Rob Beckett are all in the cast too. That is six comics in one castle.
“There will be suspicions that it’s going to be at least one of these guys, that we might form an alliance if we’re not broken apart,” he said. “I think we’re going to be the first ones under the magnifying glass.” On the other hand, that suspicion is exactly what makes the format so compelling. Nobody knows who to trust, and the paranoia builds fast.
Celebrity Traitors series 2: premiere date, cast and how to watch
The good news is that the show goes on — and it starts very soon. Series 2 premieres on Thursday, October 1 at 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer, with an extra-long opening episode. Claudia Winkleman returns to host, and 21 famous faces will join her in the Highlands. They include Bella Ramsey, Michael Sheen, Richard E. Grant, Maya Jama, James Blunt, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, broadcaster Amol Rajan, model Jerry Hall and Professor Hannah Fry. The players will battle through missions and roundtables for a prize of up to £100,000. It goes to a charity of the winner’s choice.

There is also plenty of extra content for superfans. The official video podcast The Celebrity Traitors: Uncloaked returns with host Ed Gamble. It features banished and murdered players plus unseen footage. In addition, a bonus show called Traitor or Faithful? Claudia Decides will reveal how the host picks her Traitors. Season 1 set an enormous bar. The first celebrity series aired in October 2025 and averaged 14.9 million viewers. The finale peaked at 15.4 million as Alan Carr won as an undetected Traitor. The show also picked up silverware at the BAFTA Television Awards in May 2026.

Where US viewers can watch The Traitors
American fans have their own version to follow. The US edition of The Traitors streams on Peacock with Alan Cumming hosting. Peacock recently renewed it through season 8 after a string of Emmy wins. Meanwhile, a new civilian edition called The Traitors: New Blood has just debuted on NBC.
It is a packed week for TV all around. Saturday Night Live just kicked off its 52nd season with Jalen Brunson hosting. Tonight’s 2026 MTV VMAs will dominate the conversation too. But for reality fans, October 1 is the date to circle.
