The Global Citizen Festival canceled its 2026 edition on Friday, September 25. A powerful nor’easter is barreling toward New York City, and organizers had to pull the plug. This is the first time the festival has ever been called off in its 14-year history.
Organizers made the decision after consulting with the City of New York and the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation. Forecasters are warning of two to three inches of rain this weekend. In addition, wind gusts could reach 40 to 50 mph. In addition, coastal flooding is expected across the region.
Global Citizen Festival canceled for the first time in 14 years
The festival has taken place on Central Park’s Great Lawn every year since 2012. Each edition draws tens of thousands of fans for a day of music and advocacy. But this year’s forecast made the event impossible to stage safely.
“We have spent this week working through countless contingencies, which were ultimately not possible,” organizers said in a statement. “Cancelling is a decision we have not taken lightly. Safety has to come first. This is the first time in 14 years we’ve had to cancel.”
The organization said forecasts predicted dangerous conditions on the Great Lawn. Tens of thousands of attendees, artists, crew, vendors, partners, and staff were expected. All of the production equipment would have needed to go up too. Under those conditions, safely producing the show was not possible.
A stacked lineup that won’t hit the Great Lawn
The cancellation wipes out what would have been a major night in Central Park. Ms. Lauryn Hill & Wyclef Jean were set to perform together. Their set was meant to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Fugees’ landmark album The Score. As a result, it would have been one of the most talked-about performances of the fall.
The rest of the 2026 bill was also stacked. It included Lenny Kravitz, John Legend, Lainey Wilson, Shaboozey, and TOMORROW X TOGETHER. Victoria Monét, YEONJUN, YOSHIKI, and Alicia Keys & Friends were also on the lineup. Hugh Jackman was set to host. Reports put expected attendance at roughly 50,000 people.
Refunds, donations, and where the mission stands
People who purchased tickets will receive automatic refunds, according to organizers. Fans who took nonprofit actions or donated to secure a ticket can also request refunds through Global Citizen.
The organization also pointed out that the mission behind the festival continues. The campaign has already secured more than $208 million to aid over 9.5 million people around the world. In addition, reports suggest that food prepared for the festival will be donated to people in need rather than going to waste.
A weekend of major East Coast cancellations
Global Citizen is far from the only event losing its weekend to the weather. All Things Go NYC canceled its entire three-day run at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens. The CBGB Festival in Brooklyn, which was set to feature Morrissey, was also scrapped. However, the storm’s impact stretches well beyond New York City.
The storm is disrupting shows up and down the East Coast. Ed Sheeran called off his stadium concerts at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on September 25 and 26. Maryland’s Oceans Calling Festival canceled its full September 25–28 weekend as well.
Outlets like Consequence of Sound, Pollstar, and The Needle Drop have been tracking every cancellation as it happens.
So if you had tickets to an outdoor event anywhere along the East Coast this weekend, check directly with the organizer or venue before heading out. Conditions are shifting quickly, and more changes could still follow.
