Grey’s Anatomy star Isaiah Washington has shared heartbreaking news about his family. Isaiah Washington’s wife, Jenisa Garland, died last year after suffering a massive hemorrhagic stroke, the actor revealed this weekend. He kept the loss private for 16 months before finally breaking his silence on Instagram.

Washington, 63, posted a black-and-white photo of Jenisa on Saturday, October 3, 2026. The emotional message confirmed rumors fans had whispered about for months.

“Yes…the rumors are true,” he wrote. “My dear wife of 29 years collapsed suddenly on May 31, 2025 and passed away on June 9, 2025. It came as a huge shock to me and our entire family. She succumbed to a massive hemorrhagic stroke and never recovered.”

Entertainment outlets including Just Jared and PopCulture.com also covered the announcement in detail. His post quickly drew an outpouring of love from fellow stars and longtime fans alike.

A Warning About Headaches

Along with the sad news, Washington used the post to urge his followers to take their health seriously. Because of that, he believes headaches can be a warning sign of something far more dangerous.

“Listen, y’all…some headaches are not just headaches or migraines,” he wrote. “They can be much worse and a warning sign. Get a brain scan if you can and take those headaches seriously.”

He called Jenisa “extremely private.” But he joked that she would reprimand him “from the other side” for posting about her passing.

“She has been gone 16 months now,” he added, “but she left 3 incredibly amazing children behind to continue her legacy.”

Who Was Isaiah Washington’s Wife?

Jenisa Garland — a former fashion designer — married Washington on Valentine’s Day in 1996. The two met at a dinner party in Los Angeles, and their marriage lasted nearly three decades.

In addition, they raised three children together: sons Isaiah V and Tyme, and daughter Iman. Unlike many celebrity spouses, Jenisa stayed largely out of the spotlight throughout her husband’s rise to fame.

Also, Washington has often credited his family with shaping his career choices. In a 2022 interview, he said being a husband and father made him turn down far more roles than he accepted.

His Grey’s Anatomy Legacy

Washington became a household name as the brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Preston Burke on Grey’s Anatomy, joining the original cast in 2005. However, his run ended in 2007 after he used a homophobic slur against co-star T.R. Knight during an on-set argument. He later apologized publicly and made a brief return to the show in 2014.

He went on to star as Thelonious Jaha on The 100 from 2014 to 2018 and appeared in P-Valley from 2020 to 2022. His film credits include Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, and Hollywood Homicide.

In March 2023, Washington announced his retirement from acting in a lengthy post on X, writing that he was stepping away from the entertainment industry. So the news about Isaiah Washington’s wife comes a little over three years after that farewell.

Support Pours In

As a result of his post, condolences flooded in from across Hollywood. Viola Davis wrote, “So very sorry Isaiah,” while actors Michael Beach and Tichina Arnold also shared their sympathies in the comments, according to a summary of the announcement.

Fans, meanwhile, filled the post with messages of support, praising his honesty and his decision to turn personal grief into a public health warning.

The news follows a string of recent losses in the entertainment world, including Canadian rocker Sass Jordan, who died at 63, and comedian Reggie McFadden. You can also read our full tribute to the stars we lost in September.

Finally, Washington has not said whether he plans any memorial or charity effort in Jenisa’s name. First and foremost, he seems focused on his family and on honoring the legacy of a woman he called the love of his life.

Our thoughts are with Isaiah Washington and his family during this difficult time.
