Jennifer Lawrence is teaming up with one of Hollywood’s hottest genre directors. The Oscar-winning actress will star in The Flood, the original sci-fi thriller from Weapons and Barbarian filmmaker Zach Cregger. News of the Jennifer Lawrence The Flood casting broke on September 29, and Warner Bros. has already dated the film for an August 11, 2028 theatrical release.
Deadline first reported the casting, and the news spread quickly across the trades, with Parade, Gizmodo, and ComingSoon among the outlets covering the announcement. Cregger will write, direct, and produce the film from his own original idea. So far, Lawrence is the only cast member announced. However, her involvement instantly turns the project into one of the most closely watched original films on the studio calendar.
Jennifer Lawrence to Lead The Flood
The studio is keeping plot details tightly under wraps for now. Cregger has dropped a few tantalizing hints, though. He has suggested the film unfolds in outer space, and he told Deadline the idea struck him in a flash while watching a sci-fi movie with his wife, actress Sara Paxton. When a character entered an abandoned spaceship on screen, Paxton said there is nothing scarier than being trapped in space. As a result, a lightbulb went off.
“I was thinking, ‘What would be weirder and scarier than that?'” Cregger recalled. “In a flash, I had the whole movie explode in front of my eyes.” He has also pointed to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey as a tonal north star, calling it “a really thrilling horror movie about human nature.”
Why The Flood Is a Big Deal for Warner Bros.
The project reunites Cregger with the team behind Weapons. That 2025 horror mystery earned roughly $270 million worldwide for New Line, and it cemented the former sketch comedian as one of the most bankable new voices in genre filmmaking. “Jennifer is one of a kind, and I’m beyond excited to see her in this role,” Cregger said in a statement. In addition, Warner Bros. Motion Picture chairs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy called Lawrence “one of the most gifted and compelling actors working today.”
Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment is co-producing alongside Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon. The backstory is almost as interesting as the film itself. Cregger originally developed the screenplay under Amblin’s Netflix deal, but Netflix would not commit to a substantial theatrical window. After Weapons became a hit, New Line took the project out of turnaround. Cregger had insisted the movie be made for theaters, so the studio route won out.
Zach Cregger’s Remarkable Hot Streak
The timing of the announcement could not be better. Cregger’s Resident Evil adaptation opened earlier this month to a $60 million domestic weekend. Since then, it has crossed $200 million worldwide and holds a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes. In other words, the director is coming off the biggest commercial win of his career. Now he gets an Oscar winner as his leading lady.
Interestingly, Cregger has said The Flood is not strictly a horror film. He has still called it probably his most disturbing movie yet, though. He reportedly chose to direct it instead of Gladys, the planned Weapons prequel, which he will produce rather than helm.
What’s Next for Jennifer Lawrence
For Lawrence, the role adds another major project to a packed slate. She will soon return as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. She has also wrapped the gothic psychological horror What Happens at Night opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. Meanwhile, she recently boarded the Apple Original Films romantic comedy One Month Mark, which she will also produce through her Excellent Cadaver banner.
The Flood team plans to begin hard pre-production in February and target filming for summer 2027. That leaves plenty of runway before the August 2028 release date.
Original sci-fi at this scale is increasingly rare in Hollywood. A Lawrence-Cregger pairing backed by Spielberg’s Amblin is exactly the kind of swing audiences say they want. If the film delivers on its promise, 2028 could have its first true event movie. Either way, we will be watching.
