Michael Douglas has finally confirmed the rumor Hollywood whispered about for decades. The 82-year-old actor admits that his secret Kathleen Turner affair really happened, revealing in his new memoir that he and his Romancing the Stone co-star began a hidden romance while filming the movie in Mexico. After 40 years of flat denials, he now says the official story was a lie.

People published the first excerpt from the book on October 2. The memoir, titled One Helluva Ride, arrives October 6. In it, Douglas describes meeting Turner during casting and feeling an instant spark.

Douglas was a producer on Romancing the Stone as well as its star. At first, he wanted Debra Winger for the role of romance novelist Joan Wilder. That casting did not work out, and Turner got the part instead. “Kathleen was smart, funny, and sexy with a deep, sultry voice that became her signature,” he writes, per the excerpt. “I instantly liked her, and we were immediately attracted to each other.”

At the time, Douglas was separated from his then-wife, Diandra Douglas. The couple shared a son, Cameron, who was five during the shoot. Douglas writes that both he and Diandra were having extramarital affairs, and that he left for Mexico “still technically married, but separated.”

Kathleen Turner Affair: What Michael Douglas Revealed in His Memoir

The romance grew quietly, Douglas writes. It was not a fly-by-night fling, he says. Instead, it grew out of the long shoot days, the pressure of the production, and the real respect the two stars felt for each other. They found each other first as friends, then as co-stars, and finally as lovers.

After long days in the jungle, he writes, they would eat together or head out with the group. Then, once everyone else had gone to sleep, he would sneak into Turner’s hotel room. Even so, the two kept the relationship hidden from everyone around them. Douglas says even director Robert Zemeckis and co-star Danny DeVito had no idea.

Douglas also writes that he asked Turner for permission before putting the account in his book, and she agreed. He describes their 40 years of public denials as a deliberate lie meant to protect his wife and son. “That was a lie,” he writes of the old story, adding that it was told to the world for four decades.

The pair’s on-screen spark drove speculation from the very start. The chemistry between Douglas’s Jack Colton and Turner’s Joan Wilder was so electric that fans felt sure something was happening off camera too. Cheatsheet has followed the story’s long trail of clues, noting how much sense the pairing seemed to make from day one.

How the Secret Turner Romance Came to an End

The romance ended when Diandra visited the Mexico set with five-year-old Cameron. Douglas writes that she grew suspicious during the visit. At some point, she spoke with Turner alone and made it clear that she and Douglas were still married.

That stopped Turner cold. Douglas says she did not want to interfere, so the two ended the relationship. After the visit, Douglas writes, he went back to Diandra — “for Cameron.” But he admits the reunion was a mistake. After that first split, he says, it was never the same between them again. They divorced in 2000, and he married Catherine Zeta-Jones later that year.

The two stars still had movies to make together. Turner reluctantly returned for the 1985 sequel The Jewel of the Nile. They later reunited for the dark comedy The War of the Roses in 1989. Decades after that, they shared the screen again as ex-spouses on Netflix’s The Kominsky Method. Through every one of those projects, they stuck to the same story: great chemistry, shameless flirting, but nothing happened. Looking back, every denial now reads like a footnote to a Kathleen Turner affair the world always suspected. SoapCentral’s breakdown of the excerpt highlights just how long they kept the line.

Why This Confession Matters Now

For fans, the confession closes a 40-year mystery. Few screen pairings of the 1980s crackled the way Douglas and Turner did. Now the audience finally has an answer — straight from Douglas himself.

Turner has taken the news in stride. “Good heavens what a fuss about something 40 years ago!” she told People after the excerpt dropped. “I love Michael and I look forward to enjoying the book.”

Douglas is not the only star opening up about family matters this week. Emma Heming Willis also shared an emotional update about her husband Bruce Willis, vowing his diagnosis would not be in vain.

One Helluva Ride promises far more than this one romance. The memoir covers Douglas’s celebrated career, his struggles, and his family life. In other words, this confession may be only the first headline. OK Magazine notes the memoir lands October 6, and fans are already braced for more.
