The Nicolas Cage Madden trailer has finally arrived. It is already one of the most talked-about trailers of the year.
Amazon MGM Studios dropped the first full official trailer for Madden on Thursday, September 24. It gives fans their first extended look at Cage’s jaw-dropping transformation into NFL legend John Madden.
Do a double take, because you will need one. The Oscar winner looks almost unrecognizable in the role. Prosthetics, a fuller frame, and the unmistakable presence of the man football fans know as “Boom!” complete the transformation. In addition, the trailer offers the first real footage of Christian Bale as Raiders owner Al Davis, and he disappears into the role just as completely.

This is not the Nicolas Cage you know. Forget National Treasure or Leaving Las Vegas. From the first frame of the Madden trailer, Cage channels the larger-than-life coach. He brings a booming sideline energy, expressive gestures, and the warmth that made the real Madden beloved for generations.
The trailer follows Madden’s remarkable journey across three acts. First, it shows his days as the young head coach of the Oakland Raiders. This was a man so driven that he famously dealt with a fear of flying. Then it moves into his second act as one of the most recognizable voices in sports broadcasting. Finally, it traces his unlikely path into pop culture history as the namesake of the Madden NFL video game franchise.

Christian Bale as Al Davis and a Star-Packed Cast
Cage does not carry this film alone. Christian Bale stars as Al Davis, Madden’s close friend and the legendary Raiders owner. The trailer highlights their Super Bowl-winning partnership as the emotional core of the story.
The supporting cast is stacked, too. Kathryn Hahn plays Virginia, Madden’s wife, while Sienna Miller takes on the role of Carol Davis. Meanwhile, John Mulaney steps into the shoes of Electronic Arts founder Trip Hawkins. He is the man behind the video game deal that changed everything. Comedian Shane Gillis also appears in a role that Amazon MGM Studios has not yet revealed.

The Filmmaker Behind the Madden Movie
Madden comes from director David O. Russell, the filmmaker behind Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, and The Fighter. Russell also co-wrote the screenplay with Cambron Clark. The film runs about one hour and 50 minutes and blends sports history, comedy, and drama.
Interestingly, Cage was not always the plan for the role. Reports said Russell first wanted Will Ferrell for the part, and Hugh Jackman was also considered at one point. However, once the first-look photos of Cage in full costume surfaced in May, most doubts faded. Today, after the trailer, it is hard to imagine anyone else in the role.
The True Story Behind the Madden Trailer
For younger fans, here is why this story matters. John Madden coached the Oakland Raiders from 1969 to 1978 and led the team to a Super Bowl XI victory. After walking away from coaching, he became one of the most famous broadcasters in American sports. Fans loved his excitable calls and his telestrator diagrams.
Then came the video game. The Madden NFL franchise became one of the best-selling sports game series of all time. It introduced Madden’s name to people who had never watched a single football game. As a result, his name became bigger than sports itself. Madden died in December 2021, and the NFL still honors him every Thanksgiving with the John Madden Thanksgiving Celebration.
Madden Release Date: When and Where to Watch
So when can you watch it? Here is the plan for the film’s release. Madden will first open in select theaters on November 11. It will then make its global streaming debut on Prime Video on November 18.
That release plan gives the film a shot at awards-season attention while also reaching the massive football audience at home. Two Oscar winners lead the cast, and a celebrated director is behind the camera. Expect Madden to be a major player in the year-end conversation.
