Taylor Swift is about to make VMA history in a whole new way. The pop superstar will receive the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honors at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 27, becoming the most-awarded artist in the show’s history in the process.
CBS and MTV announced the brand-new honor on Monday, September 21, naming Swift as its first-ever recipient. And with the award comes a record: it pushes her to 31 Moon Persons, breaking her tie with Beyoncé for the most VMA wins of all time.
What Is the VMA Artist Director Honors?
The new award is built to celebrate what artists do behind the camera. According to the announcement, the VMA Artist Director Honors recognizes “groundbreaking music artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling.”
In addition, the honor “celebrates a sustained and influential body of work from artists who have pushed creative boundaries and developed a clear directorial voice.” In other words, it is not about chart positions or sales. It is about the craft of directing, and few artists alive have shaped that craft more than Swift.
The timing could not be better. Swift heads into this year’s ceremony with nine nominations of her own, including Video of the Year and Artist of the Year, so she could add even more trophies to the shelf on Sunday night.
Taylor Swift’s Directing Career Behind the Camera
Long before she was a decorated director, Swift picked up the craft almost by accident. She co-directed her first video, “Mine,” back in 2010 with Roman White. A decade later, she made her solo directorial debut with 2020’s “The Man” — and only because the female directors she wanted for the job were all booked, so she simply did it herself.
That decision sparked one of the most decorated directing runs in music-video history. Swift is a seven-time VMA Best Director nominee and a four-time winner in the category. Even more remarkably, three of her five Video of the Year wins came for videos she directed herself, and they arrived three years in a row: All Too Well: The Short Film in 2022, “Anti-Hero” in 2023, and “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone in 2024.
Since 2020, she has directed more than 14 of her own videos, building a visual language that blends narrative, symbolism, humor, and autobiography. The list reads like a greatest-hits collection: “The Fate of Ophelia,” “Opalite,” “The Man,” “cardigan,” “willow,” “All Too Well: The Short Film,” “Anti-Hero,” “Bejeweled,” “Fortnight,” “I Can See You (Taylor’s Version),” “Karma” featuring Ice Spice, and “Lavender Haze.”

Swift currently holds 30 Moon Persons, tied with Beyoncé for the most in VMA history. Because the Artist Director Honors is an official VMA honor, receiving it takes her to 31 — and puts her alone at the top of the all-time leaderboard.
It is a fitting milestone for a career defined by breaking them. Swift’s directing work has steadily turned the music video into an extension of her songwriting, and this new honor formally recognizes that legacy for the first time in the show’s history.
When and Where to Watch the 2026 VMAs
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27, from 7:30–9:30 pm ET (4:30–6:30 pm PT) on the CBS Television Network. The show will also simulcast on MTV and stream on Paramount+ (Premium) in the U.S., with a global rollout the next day on Paramount+ and MTV. Snoop Dogg hosts this year’s ceremony.
Swift will not be the only legend on stage. Madonna opens the show with a special performance — her first VMA performance in 23 years, since her iconic 2003 opening with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Nirvana will also be honored with the Video Vanguard Award, while Lisa, Shaboozey, Raye, Gener8ion, Gunna, Sienna Spiro, and Yung Lean are all scheduled to perform.
