Sage Steele’s Parents, Gary Steele and Mona Steele, Lived In Various Places Due To Her Father’s Military Profession

An American television anchor, Sage Steele, credits her success to her parents, Gary Steele and Mona Steele. They raised her alongside her two siblings.

Sage is primarily known for her appearance as a co-host of ESPN’s SportsCenter at 12 noon (ET) and contributed to ESPN First Take, Mike & Mike in the Morning, and SportsNation. As a SportsCenter host, she covered the NBA Finals in 2012 and 2013 and every NBA Finals from 2012 to 2020.

Her first reporting job was at WSBT-TV in 1995, but she moved to WISH-TV as the weekend morning sports anchor and weekday reporter in 1997. She joined WFTS as a sports reporter in 1998 before relocating to Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic in 2001.

She joined ESPN in 2007 and debuted on SportsCenter on March 16, 2007. During an interview with Awful Announcing, she mentioned that ESPN had offered her a job in 2004 but had turned it down because she was pregnant with her second child.

Moreover, Sage hosted the Scripps National Spelling Bee from 2010 to 2013 and co-hosted the Miss America 2017 & 2018 pageant on ABC.

On October 5, 2021, ESPN suspended her with pay for remarks she made about Covid-19 vaccine mandates. However, she filed a lawsuit against ESPN in April 2022, alleging ESPN had retaliated against her in the months following the suspension.

She was named the first podcast host on Bill Maher’s Club Random Studios podcast network in March 2024 and replaced Candace Owens in the animated series Mr. Birchum in April 2024.

Sage Steele’s Parents Moved To Different Locations Due To Gary’s Work

Sage Steele, the daughter of Gary Steele and Moan O’Neil, was born in the Panama Canal Zone on November 28, 1972. Her parents named her Sage Marie Steele.

She grew up in a military family alongside her two brothers, Courtney and Chad. Courtney made a name for himself in the modeling industry and was featured on the cover of GQ Magazine. He has also worked with PUMA and Men’s Health magazines. Chad is a senior vice president of media relations for the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens.

Colonel Gary was of African American ancestry and was frequently relocated to different states and countries due to his job. Their family moved to Belgium and Greece before settling in Colorado Springs.

He was an athlete passionate about football and became the first black varsity football player at West Point in the mid-1960s. He was inducted into the Army Sports Hall of Fame for his standout career on the Black Knights football and track & field teams in 2013. Later, he retired from the army as a colonel after a career of 23 years.

Sage proudly talks about her father’s accomplishments in public and has mentioned he was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.

Sage Steele’s Mother Encouraged Her Not To Quit Her Profession

An American television anchor has worked in the media since 1995. She has faced many hardships and failures, including being determined to quit everything at one point.

Her mother, Mona, is a supportive parent who has always stood by her children’s side and done everything she can to help them succeed. She calls her a role model and the best friend anyone could ask for.

In 1998, she considered leaving her reasonably new job as a sports reporter and called her mother to discuss her insecurities. However, Mona firmly scolded her.

Don’t you dare let them get in the way of your goals and dreams. You’ll always regret it.

Her mother’s scolding made her rethink her decision and convinced her she could overcome any struggle. She has become a veteran journalist with nearly thirty years of experience thanks to her mother’s suggestion.

Nonetheless, Sage has three children: two daughters and one son. The American television anchor married Jonathan Bailey in 1999, but their relationship ended in 2019. She is teaching her children the ideals and values her parents instilled. She aspires to help her children overcome their fears and challenges.
