Erling Haaland Shatters Two Champions League Records in One Night — Ronaldo’s All-Time Mark Is Next

Erling Haaland has rewritten the Champions League record books once again. On Wednesday night at the Etihad Stadium, the Norwegian striker scored twice against Paris Saint-Germain to pass Sergio Aguero as Manchester City’s all-time leading scorer in the competition — and in doing so set a new Erling Haaland Champions League record as the fastest player ever to reach 60 goals in the tournament. The brace arrived on a chaotic night City still lost 4-2, yet the records stole the show and the scoring race now points at the one mark that matters most: Cristiano Ronaldo’s all-time total.

The Night Erling Haaland’s Champions League Record Fell

City fell 3-0 down in the first half, and that alone made history for the wrong reasons. Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé and Vitinha scored in the opening 32 minutes, marking the first time City have ever conceded three goals at home in the first half of a Champions League game. The reigning European champions, PSG, looked unstoppable.

Then Haaland happened. In the 53rd minute, the 26-year-old rose to meet a cross and nodded home his 37th Champions League goal for City, moving past Aguero’s mark of 36. When he rolled in a second in the 75th minute, the tally reached 38 and the Etihad finally believed a comeback was on. Maghnes Akliouche’s 63rd-minute strike restored PSG’s cushion, Ferran Torres missed a late penalty for City, and the game ended 4-2 to the visitors.

It was not even a perfect night for Haaland personally. Earlier, with City trailing 2-0, he missed an open goal from almost on the line. That miss became a footnote instead of the headline, because the two goals he did score changed the record books.

The Numbers Behind the Erling Haaland Champions League Record

Here is the part that makes the night truly historic. The PSG brace took Haaland to 61 career Champions League goals in only 60 appearances — eight for RB Salzburg, 15 for Borussia Dortmund and 38 for Manchester City. He did it in just his 41st European appearance for City since joining in the summer of 2022.

For context, nobody scores at this rate. According to reports tracking the milestone, Haaland reached 60 Champions League goals 20 games faster than Lionel Messi, who needed 80 matches to get there. He already owned the record for the fastest to 50, set in 49 appearances, and no player in the competition’s top 50 scorers comes anywhere near his ratio of better than a goal per game.

The club numbers are just as staggering. Haaland now has 172 goals in 207 games for City, making him the third-highest scorer in the club’s 132-year history — seven behind Eric Brook in second, with Aguero’s 260 still far ahead. Only six players in the entire history of the European Cup have scored more than the Norwegian.

Erling Haaland vs Lionel Messi: The Pace Gap, by the Numbers

This is the data angle that puts the record in perspective — a straight comparison of the fastest climbs to 60 European goals ever seen:

Milestone Haaland Previous best
Fastest to 50 UCL goals 49 games Haaland himself — record still stands
Fastest to 60 UCL goals 60 games Lionel Messi — 80 games
Man City’s all-time UCL top scorer 38 goals (Haaland) Sergio Aguero — 36 goals
Goals per UCL game (career) 1.02 (61 in 60) No top-50 scorer comes close
UCL Golden Boot 2022–23 (12 goals) Debut season in Manchester

In his debut campaign he became only the third player ever to score five goals in a single Champions League game, with his Round of 16 demolition of RB Leipzig joining Messi and Luiz Adriano in that exclusive club.

What Is Next: The Chase for Cristiano Ronaldo’s Record

The obvious question now is how far Haaland can go. Cristiano Ronaldo‘s all-time mark of 140 Champions League goals is the final frontier, and Haaland is not the only hunter — Kylian Mbappé is chasing it too after scoring in Real Madrid’s dramatic 4-3 win at Roma on the same night.

At 26, the math favors the Norwegian. He needs 79 more goals to catch Ronaldo, and at better than a goal per game that works out to roughly five more full Champions League campaigns. The immediate focus, though, is domestic: City arrived at this game on an eight-match winning run after a statement 3-0 win at Liverpool on Sunday, where Haaland scored his sixth Premier League goal of the season.

For now, the night belongs to the new club record. Aguero’s 36 stood as the benchmark for City’s greatest European era, and Haaland swept past it in barely four seasons. Nobody in Europe is scoring goals faster right now — and the Erling Haaland Champions League record book still has plenty of blank pages left.
