Sunrise on the Reaping: Everything We Know About the New Hunger Games Movie

“Hunger Games” is surging on Google Trends in the US today, and the reason is impossible to miss. Sunrise on the Reaping, the new Hunger Games prequel, has turned this week into a Panem takeover. Lionsgate has a free New York pop-up, a Paris costume exhibition, and an official fan-edited trailer. A new soundtrack single is out too — six weeks before the November 20 release.

What is Sunrise on the Reaping about?

The film rewinds 24 years before Katniss Everdeen volunteered as tribute. It opens on the reaping morning for the 50th Hunger Games — the Second Quarter Quell. This time we follow 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy, played by newcomer Joseph Zada. It is an anniversary year, so the Capitol doubles the horror: 48 tributes enter instead of 24.

Francis Lawrence directs again after Catching Fire, both Mockingjay films, and 2023’s The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Billy Ray adapted Suzanne Collins’ 2025 novel.

Mckenna Grace plays fellow tribute Maysilee Donner — and pulls double duty as Maysilee’s shy twin sister, Merrilee. Elle Fanning is a young Effie Trinket, and Kieran Culkin reinvents Caesar Flickerman. Ralph Fiennes plays President Snow, Jesse Plemons a young Plutarch Heavensbee, and Glenn Close Capitol escort Drusilla Sickle. In addition, Maya Hawke, Whitney Peak, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. co-star — and as we recently reported, Jennifer Lawrence returns as Katniss Everdeen.

The Sunrise on the Reaping blitz: everything that happened this week

A free Panem pop-up takes over New York

From October 8 through 11, fans can enter the 50th Hunger Games at 462 11th Avenue in Manhattan, across from Javits Center. First, a District 12 zone where propaganda posters carry spray-painted rebellion markings. Then comes a floral arena environment of greenery, butterflies, and oversized blossoms. Finally, a replica Caesar Flickerman stage offers personalized digital keepsakes.

The first 100 guests each day receive a limited-edition NYCC poster. FanCalendar has the full rundown of the pop-up experience, and Bleeding Cool broke down the exclusive NYCC poster art.

TikTok cut the new Hunger Games prequel trailer — officially

On October 9, Lionsgate released an official “fan edit trailer” cut by TikTok creator Areq (@areqaep). Glenn Close’s Drusilla Sickle slaps Mckenna Grace’s Maysilee Donner — and Maysilee slaps her right back. FirstShowing has the full breakdown of the fan edit trailer.

Panem goes to Paris Fashion Week

Meanwhile, the franchise went high fashion in Paris. “Elegance Is Authority: The Story, Style and Power of Panem” opened this week in the Musée Rodin’s sculpture garden. The installation pairs original franchise costumes with new prequel designs — proof the Capitol uses clothing as a weapon. Mckenna Grace attended the October 6 unveiling in a vintage Monique Lhuillier gown nodding to Katniss’s wedding dress. She posed with Joseph Zada by a giant mockingjay sculpture.

The Sunrise on the Reaping soundtrack takes shape

On October 2, Noah Kahan released “Draw You Out,” the album’s lead single. He co-wrote and co-produced it with Aaron Dessner, inspired by Haymitch and Lenore Dove’s bond. The 29-track album arrives November 13 via MCA, executive-produced by Dave Cobb. Kahan remains the only announced artist, so 28 reveals are still coming.

The real story: this marketing campaign is pure Capitol

In Collins’ universe, the Capitol turns child murder into must-see television. Glamorous interviews, designer wardrobes, catchy anthems, wall-to-wall spectacle — obedience through entertainment. Now look at Lionsgate’s playbook. A fashion exhibition during Paris Fashion Week. A 29-track pop album. A TikTok-creator trailer. A theme-park-style “experience” in Manhattan.

In other words, the studio is running a Capitol-style campaign for a movie about Capitol propaganda. Fans get swept up in the pageantry first, so the film’s message should land even harder. After all, it might be the most on-brand blockbuster marketing campaign in years.

What to watch for before November 20

First, the music. With 28 of 29 soundtrack artists still unannounced, expect a steady drumbeat of reveals.

Second, the press tour. The young cast will be everywhere in November, and fresh character portraits suggest Lionsgate is just getting started.

Third, the box office question. The 2023 prequel proved this franchise can thrive without its original trio. Still, the test is whether a Haymitch origin story can go bigger. And is Lawrence’s Katniss return a cameo or something more?

The fall calendar is stacked. Netflix just dropped all seven episodes of East of Eden, for instance. Sunrise on the Reaping lands right before Thanksgiving — perfect timing for the season’s biggest event movie. May the odds be ever in its favor.
