Johnny Depp Sets One Condition for a Pirates of the Caribbean 6 Return

Key Facts: Johnny Depp has said he would return as Captain Jack Sparrow only if a new film gives the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise a proper send-off. He made the comments to Entertainment Tonight while promoting his new film Ebenezer. He has not signed on to a sixth film, and Disney has not announced a return, a release date, or a cast.

The Johnny Depp Pirates of the Caribbean 6 conversation changed this week, and it changed in a very specific way. Depp did not confirm a comeback. Instead, he named the one thing that would bring him back: a fitting ending. He spoke to Entertainment Tonight during his Ebenezer press tour. The 63-year-old actor said his interest depends entirely on how the filmmakers plan to close out the franchise.

“If things are exactly where they need to be with regard to how they are going to top off the Pirates franchise… the only involvement I really want to have, truly, is just to send them off on a better note,” Depp said. For fans, that line reframes the question. It is no longer only whether Depp would return. It is whether the next film can earn that return.

Johnny Depp Pirates of the Caribbean 6 return: what he actually said

Depp stopped short of a full confirmation, and that distinction is important. He spoke warmly, however, about the one collaborator who could tip the balance: longtime franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer. “I will go to work with Bruckheimer tomorrow for anything,” Depp said. “Doesn’t matter… if it’s Jerry, I trust him. We have a deep friendship.”

In addition, Depp slipped back into the familiar rhythms of Jack Sparrow during the interview. Reports of the exchange noted that moment. It delighted fans online, but it is not evidence of a deal. As a result, the safest reading is also the simplest one. The door is open. The script is the key. And Bruckheimer holds much of Depp’s trust.

What Jerry Bruckheimer has said about Pirates 6

Bruckheimer has pushed for a Depp return for some time. In recent interviews, he has said talks with Depp are underway. A screenplay is also in development. At D23, he told Deadline, “We’re talking with Johnny, we’re working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done.” He has also said the project is a reboot in shape. But if the choice were his, Depp would be in it.

Meanwhile, screenwriter Jeff Nathanson has worked on the new script. He wrote 2017’s Dead Men Tell No Tales. Bruckheimer previously praised Nathanson’s third act. He also noted that the first two acts still needed work. So the picture so far is consistent. A producer wants Depp back. A writer is shaping the story. And a star will judge the finished screenplay before he commits.

Bruckheimer’s test has stayed the same: if Depp likes the part as written, he believes Depp would do it.

Why a “better note” matters: the franchise so far

Depp first played Jack Sparrow in 2003’s The Curse of the Black Pearl. He led all five Pirates films through 2017. The series then went quiet for nearly a decade. That gap is why an ending carries so much weight with fans. It is why a sequel alone would not be enough. The five films together grossed more than $4.5 billion worldwide. So the stakes for a finale are high, creatively and commercially.

FilmYearWorldwide gross (approx.)
The Curse of the Black Pearl2003$654 million
Dead Man’s Chest2006$1.06 billion
At World’s End2007$961 million
On Stranger Tides2011$1.05 billion
Dead Men Tell No Tales2017$796 million

The table also shows why Disney has taken its time. The first trilogy built a cultural phenomenon. Two later films each crossed $1 billion or came close. But the most recent entry earned the weakest North American gross of the series. Dead Men Tell No Tales took about $173 million in North America. A new film therefore faces a clear challenge. It must honour a beloved character. And it must give audiences a reason to return after nine years away.

What a Johnny Depp Pirates 6 return would still need

Confirmed, reported, and still unknown

First, what is confirmed: Depp said he would consider returning for a proper send-off, and he trusts Bruckheimer completely. Second, what is reported: talks are underway, Nathanson is working on a script, and Bruckheimer wants Depp involved. Finally, much is still unknown. Disney has not green-lit the film. No director or co-stars are confirmed. And Depp’s role size is unclear.

In addition, a separate Pirates project once linked to Margot Robbie has appeared in past reporting. Depp’s latest comments do not confirm his involvement in that project. Fans should not merge the two storylines. The reboot label also needs care. A fresh start and a farewell for Jack Sparrow could, in theory, share one film. But no one has confirmed that shape yet.

What’s next for Johnny Depp

Before any pirate ship leaves port, Depp has a full calendar. He stars as Ebenezer Scrooge in Paramount’s Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. Ti West directed the film. It opens in theatres on November 13, 2026. The cast also includes Ian McKellen, Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, and Daisy Ridley. He also has the Lionsgate thriller Day Drinker on his upcoming slate.

That timing matters. Ebenezer puts Depp back in a major studio lead role. Its reception will shape the conversation around his next moves. If the film lands well, the case for a Pirates farewell grows stronger. If it struggles, pressure on the Pirates script will only grow. Either way, the next real news will likely take one of three forms. It could be a finished script Depp likes. It could be an official Disney announcement. Or it could be a clear statement that the project has moved on without him.

For now, fans have something rarer than a rumour: a direct answer from Depp himself, with a condition attached. He will not return just to return. He will return to send Jack Sparrow off on a better note — and only if the story earns it. That is the heart of the Johnny Depp Pirates of the Caribbean 6 question.
