Paul Bettany is done letting the internet define his relationship with Johnny Depp. In a new interview with The Times, the Vision star finally addressed their private text messages. Those messages were exposed during Depp’s legal battles with Amber Heard, one of the decade’s most-watched celebrity courtroom sagas. Bettany said he hadn’t spoken to Depp in years before that happened, and he hasn’t spoken to him since. It is the most direct the 55-year-old has ever been about the episode. His new Marvel series VisionQuest premiered on Disney+ days ago, so he is back on the press circuit.
What Paul Bettany Said About Johnny Depp
Bettany didn’t mince words. “I hadn’t spoken to Johnny in years when that happened and I haven’t spoken to him since,” he told The Times.
“I was being painted as this close friend of a guy I hadn’t spoken to in years and, honestly, amid all the mess two celebrities threw at each other, that bit was the most odd,” he said. For context, Depp had described Bettany as a “close friend” during his 2022 defamation trial. Bettany is now flatly rejecting that characterization.
But why stay quiet for so long? Bettany, however, pointed to his famously low-key life. For example, he has been married to Jennifer Connelly for 23 years, and he said he simply decided not to engage. “So I decided to say nothing because, I think, people know me,” he explained. “I’ve been married 23 years and, for what I do, I live an incredibly quiet life.” Most people, he added, treated the whole thing as a “nothing burger” and moved on.
This, however, is not his first attempt to address the matter. In a December 2021 interview with The Independent, he briefly described the strange experience of having lawyers comb through years of his private messages. As a result, he called it an unpleasant invasion of his privacy. This week’s comments go much further, because they directly address the state of the friendship itself.

The Texts That Started It All
The messages at the center of the controversy date back to 2013 and 2014, when Depp was engaged to Amber Heard. The exchanges included violent jokes about Heard, and they first became public in Depp’s 2020 UK libel suit against The Sun. Depp lost that case, because the court found the newspaper’s “wife beater” characterization substantially true.
The texts surfaced again during the explosive 2022 defamation trial between Depp and Heard in Virginia. The jury in that case found Heard liable for defaming Depp in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed.
For Bettany, the fallout was reputational whiplash. He had co-starred with Depp in three films: The Tourist, Transcendence, and Mortdecai. Suddenly, the world assumed he was part of the actor’s inner circle. His new comments, however, make clear he sees himself differently. He is a former colleague who got swept into someone else’s legal blast radius — not a confidant.

Why Bettany’s Depp Comments Are Surfacing Now
First, the timing tells its own story. VisionQuest, Bettany’s eight-episode Marvel limited series, premiered on Disney+ on October 14 with a two-episode launch. The show closes the trilogy that began with WandaVision. It follows White Vision as he hides from those trying to weaponize his technology. In addition, it brings back James Spader as Ultron for the first time since 2015.
The series also joins an increasingly crowded Marvel Disney+ lineup, so a strong press push is essential. After six years of saying nothing, Bettany finally seems ready to close the book on the Depp chapter on his own terms.
Meanwhile, both men’s careers are in motion. Bettany is anchoring a flagship Marvel series. Depp, on the other hand, is mounting a mainstream comeback.

What’s Next for Paul Bettany and Johnny Depp
Bettany has VisionQuest rolling out weekly through late November, with the finale set for November 25. A hit would lock him in as a central MCU figure for years.
Depp, 63, stars as Ebenezer Scrooge in Paramount’s gothic Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, directed by Ti West. The film arrives in theaters on November 13, 2026. He is also lined up for Lionsgate’s Day Drinker in March 2027. In addition, there are ongoing reports of studio conversations about a return to Pirates of the Caribbean.
Whether Bettany’s explanation rewrites the narrative around those leaked texts is an open question. Some fans have welcomed his decision to clarify the record. Others, however, feel the original messages still deserve scrutiny. What is certain is that the actor is no longer willing to let a years-old text thread define who he is. Finally, after all this time, he is telling his side — and moving on.
