This Lanterns episode 6 recap covers “Bad Optics,” the third-to-last chapter of HBO’s DC Studios series. After last week’s explosive “Lights Out,” the show slows down into a quieter, grief-soaked hour. Hal Jordan is dead, and John Stewart has to return to the Nebraska town — and the life — he tried to leave behind.
John returns to Rushville
The episode jumps forward to 2026. John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) left the Green Lantern Corps, became an architect, and cut ties with his former mentor Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler). Then Kerry Kane (Kelly Macdonald) calls him back to Rushville: someone murdered Hal, and the town needs answers.
John gets a cold welcome. The sheriff locks him up after a cafe brawl, and locals still blame Hal for the destruction that hit the town in 2016. Things get worse fast. A waitress named Maggie saw John break Hal’s nose in the cafe fight, and she demands $313,000 to stay quiet. The sheriff deputizes John anyway, and the two start digging into Hal’s death.
At the morgue, they learn someone shot Hal point-blank in the head. There was no struggle. The broken nose turns out to be a red herring, and the coroner has no better leads. Still, Hal left behind a key to a storage unit called “The Fortress of Storage.” Inside, John and Kerry find an alien safe that only opens to Hal’s voice. Since Hal is dead, that door stays shut — for now.
Guy Gardner plans Hal’s funeral
Nathan Fillion returns as Guy Gardner, Earth’s active Lantern in the current DCU timeline. Guy helps arrange Hal’s funeral and comes through with Hal’s Corps uniform and ring, though his chemistry with John is prickly at best. He also drops a bombshell — Sinestro has escaped from prison.
The funeral itself is bleak. Only three people show up: Kerry, John, and Hal’s ex-girlfriend Carol Ferris. John reads a eulogy that Hal wrote himself — a quiet coda to a complicated mentor-student bond.
Carol Ferris makes her debut
Carol Ferris (Ami Mackenzie), Hal’s former love, makes her first appearance this week. Carol arrives in Rushville as Hal’s lawyer, and she is one of the three mourners at his funeral. Comics fans know Carol as Star Sapphire, but the show keeps her grounded so far. Her arrival raises new questions about what Hal was planning before he died.
The Batman reference
The most talked-about moment may be the DCU’s first live-action Batman reference. As reported by SlashFilm, Hal mocks Guy as a “gym teacher from California” who “ripped off that Bat guy over in Gotham” — then installed a Green Lantern version of the Bat-Signal over Rushville. The joke confirms Batman is already active in the DCU timeline by 2026. Still, neither Warner Bros. nor DC Studios has made any official announcement about the character.
Lanterns episode 6 recap: the ending explained
The final twist is pure John Stewart. After the funeral, John returns to Hal’s burial site alone, digs up the coffin, and takes Hal’s ring off his finger. Then he uses the ring’s remaining charge to summon a hologram of Hal — the “Halogram.” The episode ends before we hear what the hologram says, but the move is clearly part of John’s plan to solve Hal’s murder and clear his own name.
The grave-digging confirms one thing: John is done pretending he can walk away. Whether he wants the ring to catch Hal’s killer or something more, the final two episodes have to answer it. The move also connects to John’s confirmed leap to the big screen in next year’s Man of Tomorrow.
What critics are saying
Lanterns was created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, and “Bad Optics” earned generally positive reviews — though several critics called it a step down from the season’s earlier highs.
Den of Geek praised the episode’s quieter approach in its review, while Vulture gave it 4 out of 5 stars and called it a “riveting coda to the Hal-John relationship.” IndieWire handed it a B+, spotlighting Kyle Chandler’s performance. TV Fanatic rated it 4.5 out of 5 for tying the season’s threads together. IGN was cooler at 6 out of 10, arguing the show needs to dig into Hal’s murder mystery. The A.V. Club focused on John’s real shock and sadness, and how it connects to his confirmed Man of Tomorrow appearance. SlashFilm, meanwhile, argued the episode fixes a superhero mistake tied to the Zack Snyder DC era.
What comes next
Only two episodes remain in the eight-episode season. Episode 7 airs Sunday, September 27, with the finale on Sunday, October 4, 2026. The mystery of Hal’s murder is still unsolved, Sinestro is on the loose, Guy Gardner is Earth’s Lantern, and John now holds Hal’s ring. The final stretch has a lot to pay off.
