Netflix has pulled back the curtain on The Hunchback, Soul of Paris. The streamer has finally released the first official photos from its French-language Quasimodo film. It also confirmed that the movie will premiere worldwide on November 27, 2026.
The images debuted through Vanity Fair France. In addition, they reveal Vincent Cassel’s dramatic transformation into the title character. For example, one photo introduces Benjamin Voisin as a doctor desperate to capture him for medical experiments. Meanwhile, another shows Daphné Patakia in a role the studio has not revealed yet. A final image captures Karim Leklou as the Director of Security, leading a relentless hunt through plague-ridden Paris.
What Is The Hunchback, Soul of Paris About?
First, the film does not retell Victor Hugo’s 1831 novel scene by scene. Instead, it imagines the life of the real man who may have inspired Hugo’s Quasimodo. Netflix’s official logline sets the story in Paris on the eve of the July Revolution of 1830. As a cholera epidemic spreads through the city, the hunchbacked hero gets caught between political turmoil and an impossible love.
However, the tone feels closer to a chase thriller than a costume drama. Reports describe a mix of sincere romance and breathless pursuit. The runtime is a tight 1 hour and 43 minutes. As a result, expect a fast, lean survival story rather than a slow literary adaptation.

The Cast and Creative Team Behind The Hunchback, Soul of Paris
Vincent Cassel leads the cast as Quasimodo. International audiences know him from Black Swan, Ocean’s Twelve, and Mesrine. He also headlined Netflix’s 2025 satire Banger, so this film continues his run with the streamer.

Jean-François Richet directs. He made the action hit Plane and the acclaimed crime epic Mesrine. Notably, Richet and Cassel are longtime collaborators who previously teamed up on 2018’s The Emperor of Paris. The script comes from Éric Besnard and Edgar Marie. Besnard recently wrote and directed Jean Valjean, a drama about the origins of the Les Misérables hero.
The ensemble around Cassel is also stacked with French talent. Karim Leklou (BAC Nord) plays the security chief hunting Quasimodo. Benjamin Voisin (Lost Illusions) is the doctor chasing him for experiments. Daphné Patakia (Benedetta), Noémie Lvovsky, Sébastien Pouderoux, Eli Nachmani, and Alexis Rosenstiehl round out the cast.
The production is a major bet for Netflix. Its reported budget is around €30 million. Therefore, The Hunchback, Soul of Paris ranks among the most expensive French films the streamer has ever backed. Radar Films produced it, with Clément Miserez, Matthieu Warter, and Candice Vigneron leading the team.
The Real History That Inspired The Hunchback, Soul of Paris
Interestingly, the story has roots in a remarkable real-life discovery. About 15 years ago, researchers found memoirs in the Tate archives. They belonged to Henry Sibson, a 19th-century British sculptor. Sibson wrote about working at the cathedral around 1830 alongside a humpbacked stone carver. Many believe that man was the true inspiration for Hugo’s tragic bell-ringer.

Filming, meanwhile, took place across historic French locations. The shoot ran from August to October 2025. Crews filmed in Paris and the Oise region, including Compiègne and Senlis. The stunning Saint-Étienne de Bourges Cathedral stood in for Notre-Dame, and CGI will recreate the 1830s Paris skyline.
Notably, this is Netflix’s second attempt at the material. A version announced in 2018 with Idris Elba attached never got off the ground. This new take finally brings the legend to the screen.
A Darker Kind of Fairy Tale for Netflix
The project also continues Netflix’s streak of darker classic retellings. Guillermo del Toro gave Pinocchio a melancholic edge. The animated feature Steps plans to deconstruct princess tropes. Now Quasimodo gets the gritty treatment.
However, the contrast with Disney is striking. The 1996 animated musical The Hunchback of Notre Dame charmed families with singing gargoyles and Alan Menken songs. Instead, Netflix’s version trades that gloss for grounded tension. It follows a vulnerable man hunted like prey through a collapsing city.
The film was first unveiled in June 2025, and it has been one of the streamer’s most anticipated international projects ever since.
