Let’s get dangerous — again. After years of rumors, Disney+ has officially ordered a Darkwing Duck reboot to series. It brings back the terror that flaps in the night, more than three decades after the original animated show signed off.
Finally, the announcement came on September 22. It hands the cape to a star-studded voice cast. Mark Hamill will voice Drake Mallard, the mild-mannered duck who becomes Darkwing Duck after dark. Seth Rogen takes on Launchpad McQuack, the loyal but crash-prone pilot. Lizzy Caplan voices Gosalyn Mallard, and Lilimar plays Duckie, a brand-new character created for the revival.
Darkwing Duck Reboot Voice Cast: Mark Hamill Leads the Flock
Hamill is voice-acting royalty. For example, a generation knows him as the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series. So casting him as St. Canard’s masked vigilante is a clear statement of intent. Rogen, meanwhile, is pulling double duty. In addition to voicing Launchpad, he is producing the series through Point Grey Pictures. His partners there are Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee and Gabby Grantham.
In addition, the supporting cast runs deep. Dan Stevens plays Glade McTowers. Tiffany Shepis is Rosa, and Kathryn Newton voices Firecracker. Teo Briones, Tyler Dean Flores, Katie Rich and Nat Faxon round out the ensemble as Timb, Pondsy, Officer Shanks and Officer Webb.
What the New Darkwing Duck Series Is About
The official premise picks up with a clever twist. Darkwing Duck has spent the last 35 years trapped in his worst nightmare. He is stuck in an alternate world that has never heard of his superhero exploits. Then a rebellious teen named Duckie shows up. She knows all about his heroic past, and she drags the ego-fueled vigilante back into battle.
Together, the unlikely duo gets dangerous. First, they face classic villains like Negaduck and Megavolt. Along the way, they reunite with old allies Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana. Their mission: save the entire universe.
The Creative Team Behind the Darkwing Duck Reboot
Writers Sean Tretta (Star Trek: Picard) and Borja Peña Gorostegui (Lost & Crowned) serve as executive producers. Meanwhile, the Point Grey team reacted to the greenlight with swagger. “Disney said ‘Let’s get dangerous’ and we said ‘hell yeah.’”
In addition, Tad Stones, who created the original series, consulted on the show’s development. “Like every other fan of the original show, I’m excited to see Darkwing getting dangerous again,” he said. He added that the character belongs in the same tradition as Robin Hood, Zorro and Sherlock Holmes. Those are heroes whose lore gets reinterpreted by every generation of creators. Disney Television Animation is producing the series.
Why the Darkwing Duck Revival Hits Different
The original Darkwing Duck ran from 1991 to 1992. Overall, it spanned three seasons and 91 episodes across the Disney Channel, ABC and syndication. Jim Cummings voiced the title hero. Christine Cavanaugh was Gosalyn, and Terry McGovern played Launchpad. The Emmy-nominated series became a cornerstone of the Disney Afternoon era. It later spawned NES and Game Boy video games, plus a 1994 comic book.
Word of a revival first surfaced in 2020. That is when Variety reported the project was in development at the streamer. Six years later, it is officially a go. The long wait has only sharpened fan anticipation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Meanwhile, nineties nostalgia is one of streaming’s most reliable engines. Disney+ has already proven the appetite is real. The recent DuckTales revival reintroduced Darkwing and Gosalyn to a new generation. Drake Mallard’s fan-club-president storyline became a Season 2 highlight. As a result, streamers keep betting on beloved properties with built-in fanbases. A recent example is Netflix’s first look at its French-language Quasimodo film.
When Does the Darkwing Duck Reboot Come Out?
Still, that is the big unanswered question. However, Disney+’s official announcement included no premiere date. It also gave no episode count or animation-style details. For now, fans can revisit the original 91-episode series. It is streaming on Disney+.
