George Foreman is the legendary two-time world heavyweight boxing champion and successful entrepreneur. He passed away at the age of 76 on March 21, 2025. His aggressive style and incredible punching power made him very different from his peers. Hence, by the year 1973, he had gained the world heavyweight title as he defeated Joe Frazier. He knocked Joe six times in a two-round performance. The victory was huge and he then became the most feared boxer in the world. 

The Rumble in the Jungle and First Retirement

One of the most notable fights of George Foreman took place in 1974 against Muhammad Ali in Kinshasa, Zaire which is now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo 1974. As Foreman had an aggressive style and immense strength he was the heavy favourite. However, Muhammad used his famousrope-a-dopetactic, which made Foreman tired. Hence, in the eighth round, Ali knocked Foreman out, one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. 

After the loss, George suffered a defeat to Jimmy Young in 1977. The incident led him to retire from boxing. He experienced a religious epiphany during his retirement from the sport and became an ordained minister. Also, he opened a youth center in Houston, Texas which was committed to helping young people in troubled neighborhoods. 

A remarkable Comeback of George Foreman

In 1987, after a decade away from the sport, Foreman made an unexpected return to boxing. He was 38 years old at that time and wanted to fund his youth center. Foreman proved that age was not a barrier to success. Many people had doubts on him, but he kept winning fights after that and proved them wrong.

The most remarkable moment of his return came in 1994 when he fought with Michael Moorer. He was a 26-year-old heavyweight champion at that time. Even at the age of 45, Foreman shocked the world by knocking Moorer out in the tenth round. This victory was the most amazing moment for him which led him to be the oldest heavyweight champion in history and showed that hard work and determination can help overcome any challenge.

He was the name of the global household as he endorsed the George Foreman Grill which is a revolutionary kitchen appliance designed to reduce fat in cooking. This venture of Foreman turned out to be more profitable than his boxing career. He was one of the most successful athletes-turned-entrepreneurs after he earned millions from the grill. It made him one of the most savvy businessmen.

The personal life of Foreman was as beautiful as his career. He was married to Mary Joan Martelly from 1985 until the time of his death. They had 12 children together including five sons. All his five sons were named George Foreman to ensure they always have something in common. 

Throughout his life, George remained dedicated to his community service work. The George Foreman Youth and Community Center in Houston stands as  a testament to his commitment in providing opportunities for the disadvantaged youth. However , this center was just one part of his large effort to provide positive impact in people’s lives.
