Mahershala Ali is officially closing the book on one of Marvel Studios’ most troubled projects. The two-time Oscar winner has confirmed his exit from Marvel’s Blade — but his feelings are crystal clear. Meanwhile, the Mahershala Ali Blade saga has a silver lining. His new thriller Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother just landed a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score. It hit theaters nationwide on October 9, 2026.
For years, Ali sat in development limbo on a Marvel reboot that never reached production. Now he is riding high on a critical darling instead. In fact, the director once lined up for Blade made it.
Why Mahershala Ali Said Goodbye to Marvel’s Blade
Ali told Deadline at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival that he has completely moved on from the role. Seven years on the project have come to an end. He also shut down rumors of a Midnight Sons or Avengers: Secret Wars appearance for good.
“I’m done. I’m doing this and anything moving forward. I’m over that. I’m done with that,” Ali said.
He also told GQ how much time he invested preparing for a film that never materialized. “If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it,” he said. “So I have to move on, and I have moved on.”
Still, Ali says he holds no bitterness. He revealed that Marvel helped fund his new indie thriller. In addition, his year-plus of physical training for Blade carried straight into his action-heavy new role. “I got to go train for a year, so at this point, I’m so grateful that they made a wonderful contribution to our film,” he said at TIFF.

Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother: The 97% Rotten Tomatoes Thriller
Bassam Tariq directs the thriller. It casts Ali as Latif, a devout Muslim family man and father of three. He also works as a contract killer. Critics, however, have embraced it: a 97% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes across 95 reviews, plus a 94% audience score. For an original R-rated thriller in a franchise-dominated market, those numbers are genuinely impressive.
The timing could not be better. In an NPR Fresh Air interview published October 12, 2026, Ali reflected on his craft. He spoke with the hunger of someone decades younger. “Let’s fail on camera until we find it,” he said. He says two Academy Awards and 20-plus years in the business consequently left him less afraid as a performer. As a result, that fearlessness shows in this role.
The Mahershala Ali Blade Timeline: How Marvel Lost Its Daywalker
| Year | What Happened |
|---|---|
| 2019 | Marvel announces Ali as the MCU’s Blade at Comic-Con. He never films a scene — his only Blade appearance is a voice cameo in Eternals. |
| 2022 | Director Bassam Tariq departs the reboot to pursue other projects. The two men stay connected. |
| 2022–24 | The project cycles through writers and directors. Its release date shifts four times. |
| 2025 | Marvel scraps the film entirely. Kevin Feige later calls himself a “gigantic loser and failure” for letting it die. |
| Sept 2026 | Ali and Tariq reunite at TIFF with Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother — a script Tariq began writing before Blade, with Ali in mind. |
| Oct 2026 | The thriller opens wide October 9 to a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score. Ali confirms he is done with Blade. |
Yet there is poetry in how it ended. Tariq has said early drafts did not even name the protagonist. Instead, he simply called him “Mahershala.” In a roundabout way, the failed Marvel project delivered Ali one of the best-reviewed films of his career.

What’s Next for Mahershala Ali
Ali’s 2026 is not over yet. He also voices Brendan, the Bandit King, in the animated fantasy Wildwood, arriving in theaters October 23. It is the first year since 2023 he has appeared in two films. The pair could not be more different. One is a grounded R-rated thriller. The other is a PG family adventure that is, ironically, also about protecting children.
His track record also explains the excitement. For example, Ali won his first Oscar for Moonlight (2016), becoming the first Muslim actor to win an Academy Award. He won again for Green Book (2018) — the second Black actor to win multiple acting Oscars. Few performers move as fluidly between prestige drama and genre work as he does.

Will Marvel Ever Make Blade Without Mahershala Ali?
That remains an open question. Meanwhile, fan speculation has suggested names like Damson Idris as a potential successor. Wesley Snipes, meanwhile, reprised his original Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine. For now, Marvel has said nothing official about reviving the project with a new star. Ali, however, is not looking back.
