The Lords of War trailer is finally here, and it wastes no time. In just 43 seconds, Nicolas Cage is back as Yuri Orlov. He is older, still dealing, and suddenly facing the one enemy he never saw coming: his own son. Vertical released it on November 4, 2026. It sets up a father-versus-son war for the arms trade. The film reaches US theaters on January 22, 2027.
It has been 21 years since Cage first played the arms dealer in Andrew Niccol’s 2005 crime thriller. Now the sequel brings the same writer-director back. That matters: the original’s dark humor was Niccol’s as much as Cage’s. This time, though, the threat comes from inside Yuri’s own family.
What Happens in the Lords of War Trailer?
The teaser opens with a simple promise on screen: “HE’S BACK.” Then Yuri appears in a suit amid a burning battlefield, cigarette in mouth, staring into the camera. After that, the images come fast: gunfire, explosions, a truck ride with blood on his face.
The heart of the clip is the standoff. Anton walks out of an explosion in sunglasses and a suit, calm as everything burns around him. “You just refuse to die, don’t you?” he says, gun in hand. Yuri has a reasonable request: “Can we at least talk about why you want to kill me?”
That exchange says almost everything. This is not a reunion; it is a rivalry. The teaser sets the mood: scorched earth, sharp suits, and two men who know each other too well. It holds the full story back for January.

Bill Skarsgård Plays Anton, the Son Who Wants to Outdo His Father
Skarsgård plays Anton Orlov, Yuri’s son, and the casting is the sequel’s boldest move. Anton is not a sidekick or a victim. The official synopsis calls him a ruthless mercenary mastermind, building a massive private army to fight in America’s conflicts in the Middle East. In short, he took the family business and made it bigger and more dangerous than his father ever did.
As a result, the two men are drawn into a bloody battle for power, influence, and even the same woman. The film sets that fight against the US wars in the Middle East. The original used the arms trade to show how weapons fuel wars for profit. The sequel looks set to do the same.
For Skarsgård, it is another sharp turn in a career built on transformation. Audiences know him as Pennywise in It and Count Orlok in Nosferatu. Anton is different, though: human, charming, and patient. That may make him more frightening than any monster he has played.
Who Else Stars in Lords of War?
Laura Harrier, Sylvia Hoeks, and Greg Tarzan Davis round out the cast. Their roles are still under wraps for now.

The Real Arms Dealer Behind Yuri Orlov
Yuri Orlov was loosely based on real-life arms dealer Viktor Bout, a former Soviet officer turned notorious weapons trafficker. The original followed Yuri from small deals to global sales. An agent played by Ethan Hawke tried to stop him. Cage is the only actor returning from a cast that also featured Bridget Moynahan and Jared Leto.
Bout’s own story, however, stayed in the headlines. He was released from a US prison in a 2022 prisoner exchange for basketball star Brittney Griner. That is part of why the character still lands.
Why Hollywood Keeps Returning to Old Hits After 20 Years
Lords of War is part of a bigger Hollywood pattern: the decades-later sequel. Top Gun: Maverick arrived 36 years after the original and became a box-office phenomenon. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice did the same in 2024. Studios have learned nostalgia plus a new co-star can turn an old title into an event.
Meanwhile, the father-son hook gives the film a reason beyond nostalgia. A son trying to outdo his father is a story in its own right. It also lets Skarsgård carry as much of the film as Cage. If that gamble works, the sequel can honor the original while standing on its own.
What’s Next for Nicolas Cage?
Cage is closing out 2026 on a remarkable run. He takes on his first small-screen starring role in Prime Video’s Spider-Noir. He also has two more films out this month. First, he plays legendary NFL coach John Madden in Madden. It opens in select theaters November 11, then streams on Prime Video November 18. We covered his jaw-dropping Madden transformation when the trailer dropped.
On November 20, he joins Justin Long and Shelley Hennig for the action thriller Best Pancakes in the County. Then, in January, Yuri Orlov returns. It is a busy stretch for an actor who has never slowed down. At 62, Cage is still taking the big swings.
Meanwhile, it has been a huge season for first looks. Netflix, for example, just revealed its French-language Quasimodo film. We covered the first look at The Hunchback, Soul of Paris when it arrived. And if you want another crime saga while you wait, Mayor of Kingstown is heading into its final season. Our guide to season 5 has the details.
The Lords of War trailer has already done its job. After 21 years, Yuri Orlov is back in business — and this time, the competition is family.
